Adventure to Howth By: Morgan RichardsWith a free day in Dublin, I decided to take a trip outside the city and more into the country and oceanside. I chose to go north of Dublin to a town called Howth. I took the DART railway for about 25 minutes to get to this lovely little town.focallength 24flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 2.8exposuretime 0.0004camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 12:46:04 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610Howth is a village and outer suburb area of Dublin, Ireland. As I walked around this fishing village, I quickly saw the range of seafood that is offered here with tons of restaurants along the pier. You definitely know you are getting the freshest seafood with it being caught just a few feet away!focallength 44flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 2.8exposuretime 0.00025camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 12:55:23 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610At the end of the pier I saw a father helping his son fish. I saw similar things as I walked along the walkway, and I it felt at home being here. It reminded of my home in Erie, Pa., because there is a peninsula there where I also go fishing with my father. Seeing this made me miss home and my dad a little.focallength 48flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 5683fnumber 2.8exposuretime 0.00025camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 12:57:35 PMwidth 4016cameramodel NIKON D610There are many things to do in Howth, including sports. A lot of water sports like sailing, water skiing, boating, fishing take place in Howth. focallength 56flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 7.1exposuretime 0.0003125camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 1:10:15 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610Howth remains an active center of the fishing industry, with boat maintenance and some processing performed in the fishing harbor area. Howth Head is one of the dominant features of Dublin Bay, with a number of peaks. The peninsula has a lot of small, fast running streams, three of which run through the village.focallength 56flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 7.1exposuretime 0.000625camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 1:20:57 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610focallength 38flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.0008camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 1:21:46 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610I’m not a big fan of seafood, especially fish, but because seafood is so fresh and well- known here, I had to give it a try. This was my first fish and chips, but it is said they have “the best fresh fish and chips.” I got the fish in a small market near the Harbor and paid about 8 euros. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this meal. The fish was well seasoned and nice and crispy! focallength 36flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 6016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.002camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 1:56:02 PMwidth 4016cameramodel NIKON D610This is a part of the small market where I got my first fish and chips. The stand in the right corner with the colors of the Irish flag is where I got my meal. The market was full of locals selling many different types of food and desserts from about 20 various stands. focallength 48flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.002camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 1:56:17 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610focallength 55flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.000625camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 2:10:24 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610The name Howth is thought to be of Norse origin, perhaps being derived from Old Norse. Norse Vikings colonized the eastern shores of Ireland and built the settlement of Dublin as a strategic base between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. Norse Vikings first invaded Howth in 819. Howth was a trading port from as early as the 14th century. focallength 34flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.000625camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 2:43:15 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610There are many things to do in Howth such as great walks through the harbor, the Bog of Frogs Loop for scenic views of the cliffs, Lambay Island and Baily Lighthouse. You could also take a boat ride to the Ireland’s Eye and explore its long, sandy beach, bird watch or try your hand at fishing.focallength 55flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.0004camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 2:46:35 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610This is the entrance to the town market that is home to an array of Irish crafts, delicate handmade jewelry and vintage antiques, perfect for gift shopping. There is a wide range of organic foods to offer, such as olives, cheeses, nuts and desserts. You could also grab a burger or stir-fry if you’d like.focallength 24flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.0004camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 2:47:34 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610Luscious vegetation thrives surrounding a small waterfall off the sidewalk of Howth on my group’s walk back to the DART station. It amazes me that they are so many beautiful things around every corner in this country. focallength 46flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 6016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.00625camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 2:52:19 PMwidth 4016cameramodel NIKON D610Less than a 10-minute walk from the market is Howth castle and grounds. You can walk around the grounds for free and look at the beautiful surrounding gardens, which are home to a 10-meter high hedge and the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey. Inside the castle, you’ll find restored Georgian kitchens, where a culinary school, The Kitchen in the Castle, holds half-day and evening classes. focallength 26flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.00125camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 2:58:32 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610I learned in a pamphlet that the contents of the house have been accumulated over centuries. They include the Great Sword of Howth, allegedly wielded by Almeric in 1177 but more convincingly dated to the early 15th century. The family inherited paintings, furniture, fine china, photographs and books. In 1909 when the last Earl of Howth died, the house was inherited by Julian Gaisford. focallength 36flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 4016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.001camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 3:01:11 PMwidth 6016cameramodel NIKON D610Howth Castle is the private residence of the Gaisford-St. Lawrence family. The house is not normally open to the public, but the family recognizes that there is an understandable interest in it and its contents. It is believed that the fact that the house has been home to the same family for so long is what makes it unique. Unlike many other houses of its size in Ireland.focallength 24flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 6016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.001camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 3:03:47 PMwidth 4016cameramodel NIKON D610On the walk back from the castle to the DART station I heard a lot of music and people talking, so curiosity took over and I had to find out what was going on. I went up a small hill and around the stone wall and found a beautiful little church. It appeared that there was a small local fair going on. I’m glad I stumbled upon this event!focallength 24flash 16cameramake NIKON CORPORATIONheight 6016fnumber 4.5exposuretime 0.00125camerasoftware Adobe Photoshop Lighoriginaldate 5/20/2017 3:16:27 PMwidth 4016cameramodel NIKON D610
